{Recipe} Make Your Own Timbits at Home!

November 06, 2012

How wonderful would it be to be able to make Timbits in the comfort of your own home? You can control the flavour and sweetness however you like at a fraction of the cost. Not to mention no more waiting in line and you can have them anytime you want! I found out the other day that with my cake pop machine, I can not only make cake pops but also timbits! The process is definitely a lot simpler to make than normal cake pops with candy melt frosting. I quite enjoy them. They are gone pretty fast in my house.

To make your own timbits, you will need:

{Ingredients} - makes about 2 1/2 dozen puffs

1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening (or butter for substitute)
1 egg
1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup milk
6 tablespoons butter, melted

{Cinnamon-Sugar Coating}

3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

{Instructions}

  1. Beat together sugar and shortening (or butter) in mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.
  3. Alternately blend in flour mixture and milk into shortening mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Although, sometimes I forgot about this step...
  4. Fill each cooking reservoir with about 1 tablespoon of batter. I have a cake pop machine at home, for those who don't have one, a mini cupcake pan will be a nice alternative, though it won't be a ball shape... I also like to fill my batter into a piping bag or ziploc bag, cut a hole in the corner and you'll be able to squeeze the right amount of batter out. Way better than using a spoon.
  5. Bake 4 to 5 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into puffs comes out clean.
  6. For cinnamon-sugar coating, combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl.
  7. Immediately roll hot puffs in melted butter, then roll them into cinnamon-sugar mixture.

***UPDATE***
If you don't already have a cake pop machine at home, and are not ready to invest in one yet then a cake pop mold might be a cheaper alternative. You can easily purchase it at Golda's Kitchen or Amazon. Like this picture on the left, they are oven safe. All you need to do is pour the batter into the mold and pop them into the oven to bake like how you would do for cakes. Hope this helps and have fun making your own Timbits!

Let me know if you've tried them out at home!
